Italian Cheeses

Setting the Scene

For special family meals at home, ask the kids you help you decorate the tabletop.   Even the smallest ones will want to join in the fun. You will be amazed by their creativity – start by asking them to pick their favorite colors, give them lots of paper and a few crayons and let them turn an ordinary table into a magical table setting.   The amount of giggles and smiles you receive will be well worth the effort and be sure to set the mood for the rest of the mealtime.

Tabletop:

Tabletop decorations for an impromptu family meal can be made from simple supplies you most likely have on hand.  There’s no need to spend extra money when you can find everything you need at home.  We cut out each child’s initial to decorate their plates.  Then, we used colorful paper to cut fun flower shapes to use as placemats and coasters.

Décor

Kids love color – bright and beautiful.  Ask the kids to create your color scheme using their favorite color combinations.  We used colorful tissue paper (and a little bit of floral wire and tape to create our centerpiece.  We cut the petal into different shapes to create a variety of flowers.

Mood:

For kids, keep it simple and keep it fun. Throw in lots of tasty bites of their favorite foods and surround it all with bright colors.  Plus, you will all want to spend extra time around the table letting the kids entertain you!

Favors:

Extend the fun to in between courses and re-discover why kids love to play simple games like tic-tac-toe with crayons and make colorful scribbles on restaurant-style paper table covers.
We set out brightly colored marbles and bracelets so everyone could join in the fun of “guesstimating” how many objects are in each jar.

Element of Fun:

Kids love to help out in the kitchen.  We let the kids cut out round circles of cheese and bread to make our savory mozzarella appetizers.  Making meal together is a great way to engage your kids in conversation, to teach them a valuable life skill and give them the satisfaction of saying “look what I made!”

Location:

The kitchen is an endless magical place to spend time together as a family.  Not only will you teach your kids about what goes into the foods they love to eat, they’ll be sure to learn a little “cooking” science, and the art of displaying food in appetizing ways.  The time you spend in the kitchen with your kids will be rewarding for you and more than just enjoyable for them.
