In Italy, you’re never far from the sea. And with more than
4,700 miles of coastline and 50 major islands, it’s no wonder that
Italy’s cuisine has embraced seafood from the beginning. Italians
eat fish on occasion of high ceremony – such as the Feast of the
Seven Fishes every Christmas Eve – and at
everyday meals, when it often replaces meat as the
secondi (second course) of a traditional family repast.

Kids love pasta. There’s no doubt about it.
Inger Hustrulid, RD, LDN, ACSM, a leading expert on issues related
to healthy eating agrees it is hard to image a week without eating a
pasta meal. As one of the founders of Foundations of Family
Nutrition, a nutrition counseling and education center, Inger
recommends families add protein to pasta dishes. Protein helps make
the energy provided by the carbohydrates in the pasta last longer.
Here are Inger’s Tips for adding protein:
- Eat
Barilla® PLUS Pasta. PLUS provides 17 grams of
protein per one cup of uncooked pasta!
- Add seafood such a
shrimp, a heart healthy choice that can be easy and fast.
- Top the pasta with
meat or pesto sauce.
- Blend garbanzo
beans/chickpeas or leave them whole and put them right into the
tomato sauce.
- Big dipper tip: Kids
as well as adults will love to dip their pasta in a choice of
cheese or tomato sauce. Make sure to also have veggies ready for
dipping.
- Grate parmesan or
mozzarella cheese right onto your pasta.
